A selling exhibition of furniture and wood craft, presented by the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen.

The Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen, a registered charity founded in 1933, is the longest surviving craft guild in England. There are currently 56 members, all professional makers producing high quality designer crafts. It has a permanent gallery in Painswick and a number of exhibitions throughout the year.

The Guild developed directly out of the Cotswold Arts and Crafts movement at the end of the 19th century. Building on that tradition, the artist, Fred Griggs and the architect, Norman Jewson were amongst a team who organised annual craft shows in Chipping Campden, Painswick and Cheltenham in the 1920s. With the support of the Rural Industries Bureau this loose group became formalised as the Gloucestershire Guild. Among the guest exhibitors in their shows was the Broadway firm of Gordon Russell Ltd.

Building on Broadway’s important and inspiring furniture-making heritage the Guild exhibition at St Eadburgha’s church focuses on the contemporary furniture makers. These include Paul Spriggs who makes rush-seated ladderback chairs, developed from Arts and Crafts prototypes, as well as furniture in his South Cerney workshop; Brian Griffiths, a cabinet maker based in the Forest of Dean who specialises in using locally-sourced hardwoods; and Gavin Davidge who makes furniture in his Hanley Swan workshop and prides himself on working closely with his clients. Derek Elliott runs a workshop near Cheltenham. He produces contemporary designs which are simple but often include an unusual decorative feature.

Art and the crafts are particularly important to this part of Britain; they provide employment for many people and a rich tradition for residents and visitors. Members’ work is available to buy all year round from the Guild Gallery in Painswick. Further information on members as well as details of events and exhibitions can be found on our website, www.guildcrafts.org.uk.
